Calculator
Enter two proper, improper or mixed-number fractions. The calculator keeps integer arithmetic, simplifies the result and shows the working.
Show the steps
1. Convert mixed numbers
The entered values become 1/2 and 1/3.
2. Add the fractions
1/2 + 1/3 = (1 × 3 + 1 × 2) / (2 × 3) = 5/6
3. Simplify the result
5/6 is already in simplest form.
4. Final answer
Result: 5/6 ≈ 0.83333333.
Method and variables
Fraction Calculator
Formula: a/b ± c/d = (ad ± bc) / bd; a/b × c/d = ac / bd
Assumption: Each entered value is an integer; a mixed number is converted to an improper fraction before the operation.
Worked example

| 1/3 | 0.3333 | 33.33% |
| 1/4 | 0.25 | 25% |
| 3/8 | 0.375 | 37.5% |
| 2/3 | 0.6667 | 66.67% |

To add fractions with different denominators, use the least common denominator rather than the product: 1/4 + 1/6 uses 12, giving 3/12 + 2/12 = 5/12, which is already in lowest terms. Using 24 also works (6/24 + 4/24 = 10/24) but must then be simplified. Dividing by a fraction is multiplying by its reciprocal: 3/4 ÷ 1/2 = 3/4 × 2/1 = 3/2.
