Volume describes how much three-dimensional space a substance or object occupies.

The cubic meter is the SI derived unit of volume, while the liter and milliliter are widely used in daily practice, laboratory work and tank calculations. English-language volume measurements also require care: US customary and British imperial gallons, pints, quarts and fluid ounces do not have the same value.

US customary and Imperial volume

A US gallon is not an Imperial gallon, and US and Imperial pints, quarts and fluid ounces also differ. Always identify the system before converting a recipe, fuel figure or container size.

Liters and milliliters are the clearest shared reference when comparing products across countries.

What is volume?

Volume is the three-dimensional measure of capacity or occupied space.

It is used for tanks, bottles, rooms, channels, process vessels and material balances.

Cubic meter, liter and milliliter

One cubic meter is the SI derived unit of volume. One liter equals 0.001 cubic meters, and one milliliter equals one thousandth of a liter.

These decimal relationships make common metric volume conversions straightforward.

US customary and British imperial volume units

A gallon, pint, quart or fluid ounce is not automatically a single universal value. A US liquid gallon is about 3.785 liters, while a British imperial gallon is 4.54609 liters. The same distinction continues through the related quart, pint and fluid-ounce units.

The United States commonly uses US customary liquid measures. British imperial measures remain important in historical material and some present-day contexts. When a source says only gallon, pint, quart or fl oz, check the country or standard before converting.

Cubic units and container capacity

Cubic meters, cubic feet and cubic inches describe geometric volume. Liters, gallons and fluid ounces are capacity measures commonly used for liquids and containers. They represent the same physical dimension and can be converted reliably when the named standard is clear.

For example, one cubic meter equals 1,000 liters. Cubic feet are common in construction, ventilation and shipping, while liters and milliliters are common for packaging, laboratory work and everyday liquids.

How are volume units converted?

Volume conversions use fixed relationships between the source and target units.

For example, one liter equals 1,000 milliliters and also equals 0.001 cubic meters. For US and imperial measures, choose the explicitly labelled version in the converter instead of treating similarly named units as interchangeable.
