Floor area and land measurements
Square feet are common in US real estate and construction; square meters are the international metric reference. Acres and hectares are more useful for larger land areas.
Area conversion factors are squared. Converting a length correctly and then treating it as an area will produce an incorrect result.
What is area?
Area describes two-dimensional extent. It is used for rooms, plots, panels, cross-sections and any measurable surface.
Because area is derived from length multiplied by length, conversion factors must also be squared when changing units. For example, 1 meter equals 100 centimeters, but 1 square meter equals 10,000 square centimeters.
Square meters, hectares and square feet
The square meter is the main SI area unit. The hectare is a larger metric unit widely used in agriculture and land management.
One hectare is exactly 10,000 square meters, which can be pictured as a square 100 meters on each side. The square foot is common in architectural and construction practice in imperial and US customary systems.
Acres and Anglo-American area units
Square feet and square yards are useful for buildings, interiors and construction drawings. Acres are commonly used for larger land parcels in Anglo-American contexts; one acre contains exactly 43,560 square feet and equals about 0.404686 hectare.
An acre measures area, not a fixed shape. A one-acre property does not have to be square or rectangular, so its side lengths cannot be determined from acreage alone.
Regional and historical land measures

For example, one hectare equals 10,000 square meters, and one square meter equals about 10.7639 square feet. The converter uses squared conversion relationships rather than applying a linear length factor only once.
