Estimate your LED savings
| Annual energy with old bulbs | 525.6 kWh |
| Annual energy with LEDs | 78.8 kWh |
| Annual saving | 446.8 kWh · $80.42 |
| Simple payback | 0.4 years |
Note: wattage is only part of the decision. Choose bulbs with the brightness, color temperature and fitting you need; enter the electricity price from your own bill for a local estimate.
How the estimate works
The calculator multiplies each bulb's wattage by the hours it is used over a year, converts watt-hours to kWh and applies the electricity price you enter. Payback is the LED purchase cost divided by the annual cost saving.
Use your own figures
LED wattage and brightness vary between products, and tariffs vary between homes. Replace the example values with the bulb packaging and a current bill price for a more useful result.
Choosing an LED by brightness
| Old incandescent | Light output | Typical LED | Yearly cost, old (3 h/day, $0.15/kWh) | Yearly cost, LED |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 40 W | 450 lm | 6 W | $6.57 | $0.99 |
| 60 W | 800 lm | 9 W | $9.86 | $1.48 |
| 75 W | 1100 lm | 12 W | $12.32 | $1.97 |
| 100 W | 1600 lm | 15 W | $16.43 | $2.46 |
Compare bulbs by lumens, the amount of light, rather than watts. The lumen figures are the usual equivalents printed on LED packaging; LED wattages vary by model, so read the box. Savings are largest for lamps that are on for many hours a day.
