Compare your annual running costs
| Annual gas cost | $1,800 |
| Annual EV electricity cost | $675 |
| Annual operating difference | $1,125 less with the EV |
| Simple payback | Add a purchase premium to estimate |
How to use this: enter the prices you actually pay. This is a running-cost estimate: it excludes insurance, finance, maintenance, taxes, public-charging fees and charging losses unless they are already reflected in your inputs.
What this comparison includes
It compares energy used over the distance you drive in a year. The optional purchase premium is divided by the annual operating saving to show a simple payback estimate.
What to check before deciding
For a fuller ownership comparison, also consider insurance, maintenance, financing, charging access, resale value, taxes and any public-charging fees. You can return to the Decision & Savings Calculators hub as more focused comparison tools are added.
Cost per 100 km with example prices
| Vehicle | Consumption | Example price | Cost per 100 km | Cost for 15,000 km |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol car | 7 L/100 km | $1.60/L | $11.2 | $1,680 |
| EV, home charging | 17 kWh/100 km | $0.15/kWh | $2.55 | $383 |
| EV, public fast charging | 17 kWh/100 km | $0.50/kWh | $8.5 | $1,275 |
The result depends almost entirely on where the EV is charged: with these example prices home charging costs less than a quarter of petrol per kilometre, while frequent fast charging narrows the gap. Add around 10% to the EV energy figure for charging losses, and use winter consumption if most driving happens in the cold.
